Since ancient times there have been stories of dolphins rescuing humans at sea, but are they true or just legends? This film investigates two extraordinary rescues that could change the way we think about dolphins and asks whether dolphins actually empathise with the humans they risk their own lives for.
In 1996, Martin Richardson was on holiday learning to dive in the Red Sea. He was swimming with a pod of dolphins, when suddenly he was ferociously attacked by a shark. Martin was on the brink of losing consciousness when the dolphins reappeared, swam in a protective circle around him, and certainly saved his life.
In 2004, four lifeguards were suddenly surrounded by seven dolphins off New Zealand's Whangarei coast. It was only after spotting the great white they realised why the dolphins were acting strangely; herding them in a circle and leaping out of the water. For 40 minutes the pod of dolphins stayed with them, fending off the shark's attacks. Although the dolphins in each case undoubtedly saved humans, these stories are inconclusive. Were they really intending to do this or were they simply defending their own young?
