所謂「民以食為天」，食，是人類賴以生存的條件。要追求生活質素，除了要吃，亦要懂得吃。生於經營法式西餐廳家庭的卯野芽以子(杏飾)，或許是民以食為天的佼佼者。
芽以子的父親卯野大五(原田泰造飾)，立志把正宗法國菜帶到日本，與妻子在東京開辦「開明軒」。家中有一溺愛女兒的大廚爸爸，養成芽以子愛吃懶做、五穀不分的性格。饞嘴的芽以子，除了會奪去弟弟卯野照生(井之脇海飾)手上的食物外，更會偷偷吃掉擺放在寺廟供奉的祭品，可說是為了吃，芽以子會無所不用其極。
生於大阪世家的西門悠太郎(東出昌大飾)，遠赴東京帝國大學修讀建築，剛巧寄住於卯野家，與芽以子朝夕相對，漸生情愫。為了悠太郎，自小十指不沾陽春水的芽以子，居然學習起烹飪來，為討厭吃納豆的悠太郎設計食譜，每天為他炮製不同口味的飯糰便當。大五把一切看進眼裡，心裡不是味兒……
一次偶然下，芽以子認識了悠太郎的青梅竹馬村井亞貴子(加滕愛飾)，令芽以子感覺到與悠太郎之間的感情只是她一廂情願，便答應媽媽卯野生(財前直見飾)參加安排的相親，卻令芽以子發現自己深愛悠太郎，毅然離開，並主動向悠太郎求婚。最後亦如願以償，嫁給悠太郎，隨夫回到大阪，展開新婚生活。
理想和現實總是存在極大差距，本以為西式料理會受到夫家歡迎的芽以子，滿心歡喜把父親的畢生絕學帶入西門家，為夫家悉心預備餐點。豈料，悠太郎的大姊、西門家的掌權者西門和枝(木村綠子飾)卻非常討厭芽以子炮製的西式菜，芽以子只好從頭開始，學習烹調大阪的傳統菜式。
經長時間相處，芽以子發現西門家族的百孔千瘡及各人之間的複雜關係，她決定以美食溶化西門家的每一個人，化解西門家上下的齟齬。
