A few jobs ago I used to work with an older lady from Malaysia who loved to speak Canto to me when she knew I could speak it (her family speaks Hokkien at home)

I didn't know then that in Malaysian Canto, 溝 = dollar = 元/蚊

and "lui" = money = 錢

So the first time the conversation got to money, she said something like (can't remember exactly): "而家出面啲野好貴,去飲餐茶都要成五十溝(AUD),你趁年輕要揾多啲lui啦"

我: "??????媾咩女話??"

It's not exactly pronounced 女 which has a flat tone - it's higher pitched. Chinese Malaysians can explain...

A bit like how Hongkies say 囡囡
