Toon target late swoop for Sidwell

Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan has reportedly launched a late bid tohijack Aston Villa's move for out-of-favour Chelsea midfielder SteveSidwell.

Martin O'Neill appeared to have fought off a number of Premier Leaguerivals in the race to land Sidwell this summer but the ongoing GarethBarry saga has held the transfer up.

Liverpool have so far refused to meet Villa's asking price for theEngland midfielder but are thought to be ready to offer Steve Finnan aspart of the deal. That could see O'Neill finally accept and push onwith his move for Sidwell, but Newcastle are waiting in the wings.

The Magpies were close to signing the midfielder from Reading lastsummer but Glenn Roeder's departure saw the deal collapse and Sidwelljoined Chelsea. He made just 15 appearances for the Stamford Bridgeoutfit last season, though, and is set to move on for regularfirst-team action.

Newcastle have made an enquiry about the 25-year-old, according to theEvening Chronicle, but his £45,000 a week salary could be a stumblingblock and he could yet end up staying in west London.

His agent Eric Walters said: "He is in no rush to leave Chelsea.

"There is a new manager coming in and he would at least like to meetwith him over the next couple of weeks to discuss his future in person.

"He is entitled to some compensation if Chelsea agree to part with him."
N'Zogbia keen to fly Magpies' nest

Newcastle winger Charles N'Zogbia is ready totell Kevin Keegan he has a"desire to play somewhere else", preferablyArsenal or Tottenham.

The Frenchman has been linked with a move away from St James' Park following reports that he is unsettled on Tyneside.

N'Zogbia, who started 27 Premier League matches last season, has four years remaining on his current deal.

However, the 22-year-old has revealed that he will hold talks with manager Kevin Keegan to discuss his future at the club.

N'Zogbia told France Football: "At the end of last season I didn't playa lot, so that has given me desire to play somewhere else. When I talkwith the coach it will be clearer. My priority is to play.

"I have dreamt about Arsenal since I was kid. I would be delighted tojoin the Gunners. It is a famous team that has big coverage in France. But Tottenham is exciting too.

"I have never played in Ligue 1. That could be an experience in mycareer. But frankly, it is not my current priority. I am playing in oneof the best leagues in the world. And I feel a little like at homehere."
Magpies agree fee for Reds starlet

Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan has agreed a fee with Liverpool to snatchtheir young midfielder Danny Guthrie from under the noses of Bolton.

The Reds' former Academy player spent last season on loan at the ReebokStadium and Gary Megson has been considering a bid to take him on apermanent basis.

However, Guthrie will now discuss personal terms with Newcastle before finalising a switch to the north east.

A Liverpool spokesman said: "We have agreed a transfer fee with Newcastle United for the transfer of Danny Guthrie.

"We have now given Newcastle permission to speak directly with the player."
Metz defender lands Toon trial

Metz defender Sebastien Bassong is hoping to win a move to the Premier League after landing a trial at Kevin Keegan's Newcastle.

Bassong is looking to leave Metz and he is hoping to secure a move to England.

Everton have been credited with an interest in the 22-year-old, butNewcastle have stolen a march on their Premier League rivals byoffering him a trial on Tyneside.

Bassong is determined to do everything he can to impress Magpies boss Kevin Keegan and win a move to St James' Park.

"It's a very good thing for me," Bassong told French tv.

"Newcastle are not nothing.

"I will give everything and we will see how my situation is later."
Toon keen to clinch Aimar deal

Newcastle hope to persuade Pablo Aimar his future lies on Tynesideafter reportedly agreeing a £7million fee for the Argentinian playmaker.

It is understood the Magpies have agreed a deal with Real Zaragosa forthe midfielder, and reports from Spain suggest his representatives areon their way to Tyneside in an attempt to thrash out a deal.

The club, as has been their policy on transfers all summer, was makingno comment today, but they appear to have nudged their way ahead of aseries of other suitors. If the move for Aimar is completed, it will bea welcome boost for fans who have had to deal with a summer ofspeculation.

Vice-president (player recruitment) Tony Jimenez has excellent contactsin Spain, while technical co-ordinator Jeff Vetere is understood tohave spent part of his summer in South America scouting for talent.

Aimar began his career in Argentina with River Plate and enjoyed a hugely successful spell in Spain with Valencia.

However, his time at Zaragoza has proved less fruitful and the chanceto revive his career in England could prove attractive after a proposedmove to Benfica fell through.

Newcastle have already landed his compatriot Jonas Gutierrez, whocompleted his switch from Real Mallorca earlier this month, while theyhave also been linked with Liverpool's young Argentinian defenderEmiliano Insua in recent days.

The Magpies have kept themselves to themselves this summer as Keeganand executive director (football) Dennis Wise and his team have goneabout the business of strengthening the first-team squad under thewatchful eye of owner Mike Ashley.

They pushed through the Gutierrez deal under a cloak of secrecy, andthen completed a lower-profile swoop for Liverpool midfielder DannyGuthrie last week.

A resolution of Steven Taylor's contract situation has also come as aboost to Keegan, who is keen for the club to tie up Michael Owen andSteve Harper on new deals, and talks are under way with the Englandstriker as he enters the final year of his current agreement.
Aimar snubs duo for Benfica option

Pablo Aimar is set to turn his back on interest from Newcastle andEverton to join Benfica after they agreed a fee with Real Zaragoza.

The 28-year-old announced his intention to leave the Spanish side soonafter they were relegated, with Lisbon giants Benfica instantly showingtheir interest in the player.

The delay in the clubs reaching an agreement had reportedly attractedthe attention of both the Magpies and the Toffees, but now it seems thetransfer to Portugal is all but completed.

Zaragoza communications director Luis Sol told Portuguese website www.maisfutebol.iol.pt: "He is about to sign a contract with Benfica.

"Between Zaragoza and Benfica everything is sorted out. The doors are open for Aimar to become Benfica player.

"At around 6.30pm Aimar was in Soria with his team-mates, but he received a phone call and travelled to Zaragoza.

"The only information we have is that between both clubs, everything isresolved. This is the reason he went to meet the Benfica board.

"He might travel to Lisbon (on Wednesday night) with (Benfica sporting director) Rui Costa.

Reports in Portugal suggest that Aimar will be offered a three-yearcontract, and the Lisbon-based club will pay Zaragoza around 7.5millioneuros.

Burdisso rejects Toon switch talk

Inter Milan defender Nicolas Burdisso has poured cold water on talklinking him with Newcastle, insisting he wants to stay at the San Siro.

Reports over the weekend suggested Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan waslining up a move for Argentine as he looks to shore up his side'sdefence.

Keegan is in the market for a new left-back and he was thought to be weighing up a bid for the versatile performer.

Burdisso's future at Inter remains uncertain with the Argentine well down the pecking order in Jose Mourinho's plans.

Fiorentina have also been credited with an interest in the 27-year-old, but Burdisso says he has no plans to leave Inter.

"I have no intention of leaving Inter," Burdisso told the Gazzetta dello Sport. "I'm staying right here."
Coloccini set for Newcastle move, insists agent

Newcastle United are close to completing the signing of Deportivo LaCoruna defender Fabricio Coloccini, according to the player's agentMarcelo Lombilla.

Reports in Spain suggest Coloccini has already agreed personal termswith the Premier League side, who are said to have made a £7.8millionbid for the Argentina international.

Lombilla met with club president Augusto Cesar Lendoiro again lastnight to negotiate a move after Depor slapped an £11million price tagon Coloccini's head.

Tottenham are also said to have thrown their hat into the ring, but Lombilla claims he knows nothing about any rival bid.

'The only offer I am dealing with is that of Newcastle,' Lombilla toldSpanish sports daily AS. 'Which is the one that I brought about.'

Depor were set to leave for a pre-season tour of Venezuela yesterdaybut Coloccini was not included in the travelling party and a line onthe club website revealed: 'The footballer Fabricio Coloccini remainsin La Coruna as his future will be decided in the upcoming days.'

Coloccini, naturally a centre-half but capable of playing at full-back,has made nearly 100 appearances in his three and a half years at theRiazor, and Depor coach Miguel Angel Lotina knows it will be a blow tolose the 26-year-old.

'If Coloccini goes it will be the great disappointment of the summer,' he told Marca.

'The team that takes Coloccini will be getting a quality footballer, afootballer to take your hat off to and they will be playing a dirtytrick on me.

'He is a tremendous footballer for what he gives on the pitch and in the dressing room.'
More misery for Magpies boss Kev

KevinKeegan's Newcastle troops slipped to their second consecutivedefeat asthey lost 1-0 to Hertha Berlin in the Mallorca Summer Cup.

Having lost 1-0 to Championship side Doncaster at the weekend, the Magpies were looking to return to winning ways in Spain.

Jonas Gutierrez made his debut and looked sharp in a first half that was largely controlled by the Premier League side.

However, the humid conditions made it hard for both sides and apartfrom efforts from Shola Ameobi and Damien Duff, Newcastle did not carveout many opportunities.

Hertha Berlin, who have already played competitive football in UEFA Cupqualifying this season, then sealed victory 10 minutes from time whenMaximuliam Nicu headed home Lennart Haartmann's cross.
