      被人稱作「哈莉」的Harriet Korn（Kathy Bates）不相信每件事的發生必有原因，但事實卻總在反駁她的觀點。

      哈莉曾是個小有名氣的專利律師，但是因為脾氣不好，所以被老闆炒了魷魚，被迫離開那份旱澇保收的工作。哈莉對此並不在意，她對那份過於輕鬆的工作沒有太多好感，她需要挑戰。 Malcolm Davies（Aml Ameen）意外闖進了哈莉的世界。 Malcolm是一個渴望證明自己並找到生活真諦的大學生，但他現在面臨一起刑事指控。哈莉幫助Malcolm把案子了結後，Malcolm竟提出一個新的要求：他要為哈莉工作。 」

      哈莉租下一家舊鞋店當作臨時辦公地點，準備自己創辦一家小型律師事務所。就在此時，哈莉與法律天才Adam Branch（Nate Corddry）在一起車禍中「不期而遇」。在交往了幾次之後，Adam對哈莉佩服得五體投地。他毅然辭去了自己在大公司裡的工作，告別了錦繡的前程，甘願為哈莉打下手。

      這三個「臭味相投」的人有一個共同點：他們需要一個全新的開始。但需要全新開始的並不止他們－－哈莉的新助手Jenna以前在鞋店工作，對鞋子瞭如指掌，但對法律卻所知不多，她只有不斷學習才能跟得上三位同事的節奏。

      一個名為「哈里特律師事務所兼優質鞋店」的奇異公司就這樣開張了。
