Venice is a city in northeastern Italy sited on a group of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges. It is located in the marshy Venetian Lagoon which stretches along the shoreline, between the mouths of the Po and the Piave Rivers. Venice is renowned for the beauty of its setting, its architecture and its artworks. The city in its entirety is listed as a World Heritage Site, along with its lagoon.
Venice is the capital of the Veneto region. In 2009, there were 270,098 people residing in Venice's comune (the population estimate of 272,000 inhabitants includes the population of the whole Comune of Venezia; around 60,000 in the historic city of Venice (Centro storico); 176,000 in Terraferma (the Mainland), mostly in the large frazioni of Mestre and Marghera; 31,000 live on other islands in the lagoon). It is actually happening. Sea levels have been observed to be rising by 0.45mm a year. That said, it probably would still be safe to take a trip to Venice before we are getting too old to do so. But I'm afraid in a hundred years or so, things will start getting interesting there.

威尼斯的水道舉世知名。潟湖上的118座群島約由150條水道交織而成。構成威尼斯的島嶼約擁有400座橋樑。在古老的城市中心，運河取代了公路的功能，所以主要的交通模式是步行與水上交通。19世紀設立火車站，鐵路長堤把威尼斯主島西北部與義大利半島連接起來。20世紀，又加建公路長堤和泊車場。威尼斯主島西北部因而成為鐵路和道路的入口處。中心舊市區街道狹窄，為步行區，是歐洲最大的無汽車地區。在21世紀，這座無車都市是相當獨特的。目前聖塔露西亞車站則是威尼斯唯一的鐵路車站。
