Real say Robinho worth more than US$95mil Chelsea-offer

MADRID: Real Madrid’s Robinho (pic) is worth much more than the US$95mil price tag Chelsea is reportedly offering to pay for the Brazil forward, according to club president Ramon Calderon.
“There are very few players out there like Robinho,” Calderon told reporters on Tuesday.
His remarks followed British newspaper report that Robinho was ready to leave the club after not being offered a contract extension while being used as a pawn in Madrid’s chase of Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 24-year-old supposedly is eager to play for coach Luis Felipe Scolari – a fellow Brazilian – at Stamford Bridge. He already has reportedly agreed to a five-year deal worth US$3.2mil per season with last season’s Champions League finalist.
“There is no news with Robinho, to tell you the truth,” Calderon said. “He’s not upset with Real Madrid. He was at the club yesterday and he told us he was happy to continue with us.”
Robinho did not join the club at its preseason camp in Algarve, Portugal, instead preparing to join Brazil for the Olympics. Whether he returns to the two-time defending Spanish champion after the Aug 8-24 Beijing Games is uncertain.
“Madrid have failed to value him as he deserves,” his agent Wagner Ribeiro told The Guardian newspaper. “Money is not the problem for us now. What matters for Robinho is to leave the club and play for Scolari at Chelsea.”
Madrid paid Brazilian club Santos US$40mil for Robinho, who often has been touted as an heir apparent to Pele but who has only shown his talent in flashes since moving to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in 2005.
