I think the tax rate is determined by county or city, the place where I lived got increased .25 to 9% now, but my neighbor city Pico Rivera is 10%.

In florida, sales tax ranges from 6 to 7.5%

People living in Hong Kong, visiting other cities are ususally shocked when asked to pay sales tax. "What! I ate only $100. Why do I have to pay $107????......." This came from my very rich uncle.

American are lucky paying much lower sale tax than the 12% imposed on Canadian. In US different counties have different tax rate. Sale taxes are so different in individual counties even in the same state.
