Liverpool council approves stadium changes

Liverpool City Council unanimously approved plans for a new stadium from the club.

The new stadium will hold 15,000 more than the existing site, with the flexibility to increase that number in the future.

Club owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks commissioned the stadium redesign, wanting extra amenities. The new stadium will have 114 executive boxes, twice the number in the original design, and will regenerate public land which stands between Anfield and Everton's ground, Goodison Park.

The target finish date is August 2011.

Residents near the prospective site have not been pleased however.

"I believe the officers of the council have acted as agents of the club, not agents of the people," said Local councillor Steve Radford, who added the new stadium was a "monstrous" development.
