Australian Emu


The Emu is a large flightless bird. They stand to be 1.6 to2 metres tall, and weigh around 30-45 kilograms. Although their wings aregreatly reduced, they have long powerful legs which allow them to run extremelyfast. The female is larger than the male. The Emu is the world's third largestbird.

Emu's feed on grass, leaves, fruit and small insects. Theycan only be found in Australia.

The female lays up to 20 eggs, which are large and are darkgreen in colour. The male nurtures the eggs for a period of 7-8 weeks, and doesnot leave the nest for this period. When the eggs hatch, the male emu looksafter the hatch-lings for another six months.
